I painted this little skunk with my left hand and my son's leftover paint. He eventually became the cover of ANYMALS, but Skunk means something especially tender to me beyond the album.
In the song Skunk (Un-existing), Skunk sits beside the part of me that gets tired of taking up space.
The part that says sorry too quickly. The part that feels like a burden. The part that wants to become smaller when things get hard. The part that sometimes needs somebody else to hold her place in the world until she can feel it underneath her own feet again.
Skunk never asks that part to become fearless or grateful or suddenly love being alive.
He just stays.
“You don't have to want to be here.
I'll stay anyway.”
And when that old voice starts creeping closer, Skunk has boundaries.
He stomps his feet. He raises his tail. He gives plenty of warning. He occupies his little patch of earth without apologizing for having a body on it.
One of my favorite lines from the song is:
“The real fight is you against you.
Your self hate is the old story.
Sorry is the apology for existing.
Sorry is a wall.
The one you built to keep yourself small.
The part that still believes you don't matter.”
Skunk is the little animal in this album who reminds me: this space is yours.
He represents boundaries, self-protection, staying, and learning that taking up space requires zero apology. He also represents the insecure parts of me that are still learning all of those things. I painted him while I was learning them, too. He is also inspired by Archangel Uriel. Earth. North. The First Quarter moon.
So there's something that makes me smile about putting him on a coaster.
