From my song, Red Robin. This line is the heart of the song for me. A reminder that I belong here. That the day itself is on my side. That I am allowed to be in it. I have spent a lot of my life not wanting to be alive. There were long stretches where hope felt like something other people had. Something I could not reach. And then, sometimes, a red robin would land in front of me. Often enough that I started to notice. The song is me chewing on a verse from the Book of the Law. Nuit says: "All sorrows are but as shadows; they pass & are done; but there is that which remains." I wrote it as: "All sorrows are but as shadows, they pass when light agrees."
Depression is rage with nowhere to go.
That line is from my song Pretender, on the album FVNERAL of False Selves. Depression kept me in a place where I did not want to be alive. I had no energy to move. No hope to hold onto. Anger was the first emotional rung that moved me. It gave me energy to change my circumstance. I have learned that I cannot skip the anger. When I try to stuff it down, it turns into pain in my body. Migraines. Fibromyalgia. IBS. Hives. Louise Hay maps those emotional patterns to physical symptoms in her book You Can Heal Your Life. The body carries what the mind cannot process.
Ordinary hope carries me on.

The days I just need to look and stay. Louise Hay taught that we have been bullying ourselves for years, and that maybe we could try being kind instead. But I could not get there right away. I could not say "I approve of myself" at first. I started more general.
I started with "I am willing."
I am willing to like myself.
I am willing to change.
I am willing to receive.
"I love you anyway" became my anchor.
A reminder that I do not have to be fixed to be loved.
I do not have to be polished to be held.
I just have to show up.
