I painted this little skunk entirely with my left, non-dominant hand using my son's leftover paint.
For years, I could compare myself right out of making art. I wanted the anatomy right. I wanted clean lines. I wanted whatever came out of my hand to match what I could see in my head.
So lately I've been giving the pencil to my left hand instead.
The line wobbles. The anatomy gets weird. My son chooses the palette.
The assignment is just: make it anyway.
Somewhere in that practice, this little skunk became the cover of ANYMALS, a five-song album for the frightened, defensive, insecure parts of myself I spent years fighting.
I gave those parts animals.
Coyote is the part of me that knows what it feels like to be left for dead. Porcupine hears something in a tone and starts looking for teeth. Seahorse panics when she is seen and wonders what her reactions say about her. Skunk says sorry like existing requires permission.
And Skunk goes somewhere especially vulnerable for me.
He's the part that gets tired of occupying space at all.
In Skunk (Un-existing), Little One says:
“Some days I forget I have a boundary
I'm remembering who I was
Before I was told who to be
I still say sorry too much
Skunk stomps.
The real fight is you against you
Your self hate is the old story
Sorry is the apology for existing
Sorry is a wall
The one you built to keep yourself small
The part that still believes you don't matter”
Skunk is skittish. He jumps at shadows. He gives warning after warning. And eventually, when something keeps coming, he raises his tail.
He occupies his ground.
For me, he's becoming this strange little animal of boundaries, presence, self-protection, and staying.
And then Coyote returns at the end of the album because apparently healing has the decency to circle back and make me do this crap again. 😂 I fall apart again. I lose myself again. I gather myself.
Coming back never means I finally learned how to stop falling apart. It means I know I can come back.
ANYMALS also carries another layer underneath all of this. The album moves through the directions and elements of the LBRP, with each animal connected to an archangel and a phase of the moon: Coyote with Raphael and Air in the East, Porcupine with Michael and Fire in the South, Seahorse with Gabriel and Water in the West, Skunk with Uriel and Earth in the North, and the returning Coyote moving through the Center with Sandalphon and Metatron.
All of that lives underneath five songs about being a messy human being.

I'm still getting used to the fact that people spend their time listening to my songs, reading my words, looking at my art, and sometimes even choose to wear something I made.
That part is wild to me.
