The MMRP: A Personal Adaptation of LBRP

The MMRP: Mom Magick Ritual of Protection
I am a trauma survivor, a mom, and a creator who has deeply integrated healing into my art and rituals. This ritual is part of that.
I have always loved the LBRP, but I totally never understood what I was saying. The Hebrew words were beautiful, but they felt distant. I wanted to know what I was actually speaking.
So I made this English version. I call it the MMRP — Mom Magick Ritual of Protection.
A quick note: I am not a teacher. I am sharing where I am in my practice. I practice what I can hold. I am always learning. If you are curious about the original LBRP ritual, I encourage you to look it up. There are many teachers, and many do it differently. Magick is personal. Make it your own.
Why I Made It
It is not a replacement for the LBRP. It is a companion practice. I practice both. When I do the LBRP with my husband, I use the Hebrew words. On my own, I use my MMRP. I say the Hebrew out loud and think my English in my head at the same time. Or if I am doing my MMRP, I think the Hebrew in my head while I say my English words.
Both rituals are going on in my head regardless of which one I am doing at the moment. The words layer over each other. The meaning deepens.
The Structure
The MMRP has three parts, just like the LBRP.
Part 1 — The Cross of Being
This is where I invoke the self. I establish myself as the center.
I touch my forehead and say Crown of Stars.
I touch my chest and say Root of Earth. (Or point to the ground.)
I touch my right shoulder and say Hand of Creation.
I touch my left shoulder and say Heart of Receiving.
I put my hands at my heart in prayer position and say: I am the bridge between Heaven and Earth.
I pause. I feel the cross of light around me.
I open my arms out to my sides and say: I call the Light to me, and I stand in It’s truth.”
Part 2 — The Circle and the Four Pentagrams (Or crosses, or your own sigil)
This is where I create the sacred container and invoke the guardians.
I point my dominant hand two fingers in front of. I cast the circle by turning 360 degrees clockwise.
I say: This is my circle. Sacred. Safe. Sealed.
Then I face each direction and draw a Pentagram in the air.
I say:
East: I call the breath of beginnings. Protect this space.
South: I call the flame of courage. Protect this space.
West: I call the tides of truth. Protect this space.
North: I call the bones of becoming. Protect this space.
The Animals in the Invocation
When I do the LBRP with the animals, my invocations sound like this:
Arms spread wide:
“Before me Coyote (guide me).
Behind me Seahorse (heal me).
On my right hand Porcupine (protect me).
On my left hand Skunk (ground me).”
For about me flames the Pentagrams.
And within me shines the six-rayed star.
Part 3 — The Close and Seal
This is where I seal the field.
I repeat the Cross of Being. I feel the energy ground back into my body. I feel the protection seal around me.
Then I touch my lips with my right index finger and breathe.
I stomp to seal it when I’m done.
The Elements
My MMRP is focused on the elements.
Breath of beginnings is Air, East. Beginnings, clarity, inspiration.
Flame of courage is Fire, South. Protection, action, passion.
Tides of truth is Water, West. Emotion, healing, flow.
Bones of becoming is Earth, North. Grounding, structure, presence.
I like the elements. They ground me. They remind me of the physical world, the body, the ground beneath my feet.
Protecting the Inner Space
The LBRP/MMRP protects the outer space. It marks the boundary between me and the world. It says this space is mine.
But it also protects from the parts of myself that attack me from the inside. The voice that says I am nothing. The voice that says I am too much. The voice that tells me to disappear.
The animals, or angels, or whatever figures you prefer to imagine, help with that.
Coyote (Part 1) guides me through the shadow. The left-for-dead. The getting up anyway. This is Raphael's air, the guide who leads me through the East.
Porcupine protects me from my own sharp edges. The quills that come out before the hurt lands, my defensive nature. The guilt that follows. The self-attack that turns the quills inward. This is Michael's fire, the protector who stands guard at the South gate.
Seahorse holds me through the panic attack. The spiral. The shame of my reactions. The monster that comes after. This is Gabriel's water, the healer who flows with me through the West.
Skunk marks the boundary between me and the voice that says I don't belong. Skunk locks the door. Skunk stays anyway. "If you can't find a reason, let me be the reason you stay." This is Uriel's earth, the ground that holds me steady at the North gate.
Coyote (Part 2) holds it all at the center. The integration. The licking wounds. The keeping going. This is Metatron and Sandalphon. The scribe who records all that I am and the weaver who turns my prayers into songs. The six-rayed star shines within me.
The six-rayed star shines within me. The angels and the animals are the same guardians, just wearing different faces.

The Animals
This is where the MMRP got way more fun for me.
I wrote an album called ANYMALS — What the Little One Said. I picked four animals I have always loved — coyote, porcupine, seahorse, skunk. They are the underdogs. The unappreciated ones. The ones with soft underbellies and sharp edges.
And then I realized they each represented an element.
Coyote is Air, East. The guide.
Porcupine is Fire, South. The protector.
Seahorse is Water, West. The healer.
Skunk is Earth, North. The boundary.
So I started picturing them in my ritual.
When I say I call the breath of beginnings, I see Coyote at the East.
When I say I call the flame of courage, I see Porcupine at the South.
When I say I call the tides of truth, I see Seahorse at the West.
When I say I call the bones of becoming, I see Skunk at the North.
I could never picture the angels as easy. Distant. Figures from someone else's story.
The animals are so much easier for me to see in my head.
Now, when I do the LBRP with my husband, I still say the Hebrew names. I still invoke Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel. But in my head, I am picturing the animals too. Sometimes I see Michael and Porcupine together. Sometimes I can hold both images at once. The angel and the animal. The tradition and my own adaptation.
The animals are new to my practice. They only started showing up during the writing of the ANYMALS album. But they already feel like they have always been there. They were just waiting for me to see them.
The Change
When I first made the MMRP, I used crosses in the four directions. Crosses felt simple. They felt personal. They worked at the time.
But I decided to go back to the stars. The pentagrams. They just feel more better to me.
The ritual is still the same. The words are still the same. The intention is still the same. I just changed the shape I draw.
Magic is allowed to change.
Skunk and the LBRP
Skunk has become a powerful symbol for me.
The spray is the boundary.
The stomp is the seal.
The tail is the warning.
Skunk marks the territory. Skunk says this space is mine.
That is exactly what the LBRP does. It marks your territory. It seals your space. It says this far, no further.
Skunk is the LBRP in animal form.
From my Skunk song:
“You don't have to want to be here.
I'll stay anyway.
You don't have to want the ground.
We'll lock the door anyway.
Skunk is not sorry.
This space is yours.
I'll keep you safe,
even from yourself.”
The Sensory Experience
Over the years, I have experienced a range of sensations during the ritual.
Sometimes I feel temperature changes (warmth or coolness). Sometimes I feel a touch, a hand on my shoulder, a breeze in front, or a soft pressing on my back.
Sometimes I feel warmth moving through my body, especially across my shoulders. Sometimes I wobble or get a little dizzy. Sometimes I see geometric visuals (pentagrams, hexagrams, the glow of light).
And sometimes I get an extreme wave of feeling so present and aware. That is the goal. That is the moment when the ritual stops being a doing and becomes a being.
I am not performing the ritual. I am the ritual.
The Emotional Layers
The ANYMALS album grew out of this practice. Each animal became a conversation with my inner child.
Coyote Part 1 spoke with me about survival. About being left for dead and getting up anyway. The hurting that happened, and the hurting I’ve done.
Porcupine spoke with me about the defensive reaction. The quills that rise before the hurt comes. The guilt after the sharp word. The self-attack that follows.
Seahorse spoke with me about panic. The spiral, the freeze, the heat, the shame. The terror of being perceived. The monster that comes after.
Skunk spoke with me about the exhaustion of existing. The voice that says no one wants you here. The wish for the ground to swallow you. And the staying anyway.
Coyote Part 2 spoke with me about the practice. The work that is never done. The licking wounds in the dark. The keeping going.
The LBRP (or my MMRP) keeps the outer threats out. The animals/angels protect me from myself when I forget I am worth protecting. They keep me safe from the voice that says I am nothing, the voice that says I am too much, the voice that tells me to disappear.
The Bigger Picture
What I have come to learn is that all that really matters in magick, and in life, is the intention. The thoughts I am choosing to focus on.
I need this somatic exercise. I need it. I do not feel right if I do not do it.
The MMRP is not about getting every detail perfect. It is about showing up. It is about intending. It is about being present.
The ritual works because you work it.
Resources
If you want to learn more about adapting the LBRP, I recommend exploring Phil Hine's chaos magic adaptation and the Witches' LBRP by Paul Hume. Both show how flexible this ritual framework can be.
I also practice the solar adorations from Liber Resh Vel Helios with my husband after the LBRP. I recorded an album called Adore the Sun that walks through those adorations.
The ANYMALS album is complete. It deepened my understanding of the ritual in ways I did not expect. The songs are invocations. The animals are guardians. The album is the ritual in another form.
Closing Thoughts
If you practice the LBRP, know that you are not alone. People practice differently. There is no single right way.
Stay humble. Stay curious. Stay grounded.
Crow keeps watch over you. 🐦⬛
