She says them like she has been watching the whole time and knows it is true.
I wrote that line because I needed to hear it. I needed someone to tell me the fight was over. I needed someone to witness the fear and then release it. I needed someone to say: you can stop bracing now. You can put your shoulders down. You can breathe. Relax your furrowed brow.
I still brace. I still wait for the other shoe to drop. I still scan rooms for signs of threat. I still hold my breath like something bad is about to happen. That is the old pattern. That is the grief living in my body.
But I remind myself:
the danger's past.

I am safe now.
I am safe to be seen.
I am safe to be still.
