Give the Anger Space to Spill | Rage Fit | Inner Child | Somatic Release | Parenting | Emotional Ladder | Depression Is Anger With Nowhere to Go | Loui Crow Lyric | | Mug with Color Inside 11 oz
For the ones who are learning to feel their anger without hurting the people they love.
For the ones who were taught that anger is bad.
For the ones who swallowed their rage until it turned into depression or chronic illness.
For the ones who snapped at the people they love and hated themselves after.
For the ones who are still learning how to find a safe container for their fire.
This line is from my song: I Love You More. It is the permission my inner child needs to hear. Give the anger space to spill. Not at anyone. Just into the air. Just into the ground. Just through the body where it can move and release.
I lived in depression for many years.
“Depression is anger with nowhere to go.”
I wrote that line in my song Pretender because I lived it. I had so much rage trapped inside me and no idea what to do with it. So it turned inward. It became exhaustion. It became the feeling of always wanting to disappear.
Then I started feeling the anger. For years, I was angry. But being angry was better than not wanting to live. It was the next rung on the emotional ladder that moved me out of depression. I needed to feel it. I needed to let it move through me. I could not skip it. I had to climb through it.
But anger is dangerous when it has nowhere safe to go.
It leaks out sideways. It lands on the people we love. I was so reactive and I hated it.
I found Louise Hay. I found Janet Lansbury. I’m starting to understand that my reactions were not about my son. They were about Sarah. My inner child was getting triggered. She never got to be fully angry. She never got to say no. She learned to swallow everything and disappear and smile.
So I started doing rage fits.
I would go into the yard with a rake and just slam it into the ground. I would scream. I would stomp. I would let my body do what it needed to do. All the rage I had swallowed for years finally moving through me. Not at anyone. Just into the earth.
When we moved, I lost the yard. Now I do quiet rage fits on the balcony or in the bathroom. Stomping. Breathing. Shaking. Letting the energy move. It helps more than I can say.
I still mess up. I still snap sometimes. But nowhere near as much as before. I am getting better all the time. Every time I feel myself getting short fused with my son, I know Sarah is triggered. Now I can separate them. I can step away. I can give her a few minutes to de-escalate. I can hold the boundary without losing myself.
My son is my greatest teacher. He feels his anger with his whole body. Screams. Stomps. Hits. Yells. Throws. Spectacular tantrums. And then when he is done, he is just done. He does not hold onto it. He does not let it fester. He feels it and lets it go.
I am learning from him. I am learning to feel it and let it go.
This is a reminder that anger is allowed.
That it is not bad. That it needs a place to go. That you can feel it without hurting the people you love.
I am still learning. I am still messing up. I am still getting better.
Thank you for looking.
Crow is watching over you.
